Brazil Condemns NATO Head’s Threats

(MENAFN) Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has strongly criticized remarks made by the NATO Secretary-General concerning possible secondary sanctions targeting BRICS countries that continue trading with Russia.

On Tuesday, Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that Brazil, India, and China could face “consequences” if they persisted in maintaining commercial relations with Russia.

He specifically highlighted the trade of oil and gas, urging the leaders of these nations to contact Russian President Vladimir Putin and encourage him to participate “serious[ly]” in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.

Brazil is a founding member of BRICS, an economic alliance established in 2006 alongside Russia, India, and China. Over time, the bloc has grown to include South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Indonesia.

In response to interest from over 30 countries, BRICS introduced a new ‘partner country’ designation last year to accommodate expanding membership.

In an interview with a news agency on Friday, Vieira dismissed Rutte’s assertions as “totally absurd,” emphasizing that NATO is a military alliance rather than a trade organization, and that Brazil does not belong to it.

“Brazil, like all other nations, manages trade issues bilaterally or through the WTO framework. Consequently, these statements by Rutte are completely baseless and irrelevant,” Vieira concluded.
